THC, CBD, and CBN: Effect, Similarities, and Differences

Slumber Sleep Aid | Try CBN For Sleeping CBN 2

[There are dozens of cannabinoids that are potentially useful, but three of the most popular are THC, CBD, and CBN. Though they are all related, they each have their own properties, uses, and benefits. Let’s explore the differences between THC, CBD, and CBN so you can determine which will work best for your specific needs.

What is CBN?

Cannabinol, abbreviated as CBN, was discovered back in 1986 and has recently begun to gain popularity. CBN is a cannabinoid that is a product of THC that has been oxidized. When exposed to air, light or heat for a prolonged period of time, THC slowly turns into CBN. When ingested, CBN acts on the endocannabinoid system and binds to CB-2 receptors in our bodies. CBN has none of the psychotropic effects that are common when ingesting THC. This makes CBN a great way to get many of the benefits of cannabinoids without the feeling of being “high”.

Benefits of CBN

CBN could be a solution for many who have trouble sleeping! An analysis shared in 2017 by Steep Hill Labs shows that a dose of 2.5 to 5 milligrams of CBN works as well as 5 to 10 milligrams of diazepam, a commonly used pharmaceutical sedative. This same study also discusses CBN’s ability to reduce intraocular pressure, making it a natural treatment option for Glaucoma without the psychoactive effects of THC. CBN has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as anti-convulsant properties. Some have reported that it can relieve pain and be an appetite stimulant as well.

What is CBD?

By now, most of us have heard of CBD, which is short for Cannabidiol. It’s found in the hemp and cannabis plant, and it’s everywhere! Maybe you’ve seen it for sale online or even in grocery stores and gas stations thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which makes industrial hemp that contains less than 0.03% THC federally legal in the United States. CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid and has many uses. CBD is non-psychotropic, meaning it does not alter cognitive abilities.

Benefits of CBD

CBD has a variety of potential positive effects. Research supports the use of CBD for nausea, chronic pain, and even seizures. In June 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epidiolex, a CBD product that can be used to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, two severe pediatric seizure disorders. Many users also choose CBD to help relieve inflammation, calm anxiety and counteract some of the intoxicating effects that THC can have if they’ve consumed too much.

What is THC?

THC, aka tetrahydrocannabinol, might be the most widely known of these three cannabinoids. It is the main psychotropic component in cannabis and is what creates the euphoric or “high” feeling when consumed. Between THC, CBN, and CBD, THC has the most potent psychoactive effects. The reason for this is because THC mimics anandamide, a naturally produced neurotransmitter known as the “bliss molecule.” Anandamide activates the CB1 receptors, which can create a feeling of enhanced pleasure associated with food or exercise (runner’s high).

Benefits of THC

Research is continuing to evolve with the advancement of legalization, so we are learning more about THC every day. THC has been known to help with inflammation, Glaucoma, and Crohn’s disease. Research shows that THC can be of benefit to cancer patients to help relieve pain and nausea and vomiting that is often induced by chemotherapy.
