How Sleep Affects Health

While we sleep, our bodies move into recovery mode, repairing our muscles, forming memories and removing waste from our brains. Without adequate slumber, we become at higher risk for serious health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and dementia. 

Sleep is also directly linked to weight loss. When we don’t get enough restful zzz’s, our bodies produce more ghrelin, a hormone that makes you hungry, and less leptin, a hormone that controls appetite. That’s a recipe for overeating, and several studies have shown that sleep-deprived individuals tend to choose foods that are high in calories and carbohydrates. 

Less sleep can also lead to less energy to exercise and make certain activities, like weightlifting, less safe. On the flip side, regular exercise can help improve sleep.

Even if your New Year’s resolutions aren’t focused on physical health, quality sleep is also crucial to our mental health and cognitive performance.
